Nothing like catching a band on the ascension. Belgium’s Black Box Revelation, now on tour with Jane’s Addiction, is a two-man noise factory of dirty rock and blues. With songs built on wicked licks, pummeling drums, and snarling vocals — think White Stripes, the Kills, Black Keys, etc. — the band creates a wall of sound that’s sexy, sweaty, and a bit dangerous.

The Melody Inn was packed Thursday night to see the band, on an off night from the Jane’s tour, along with local acts Phyllis and The Kemps. BBR’s music creates an atmosphere akin to a Lynchian roadhouse — some swagger, some sin — where the songs feel like more of a total package than a spotlight for individual songs. Still, a few stood out, including High on a Wire and older tune, I Think I Like You.

Though better known in Europe, the band’s U.S. profile is set to rise with the current tour and a mid-year date on Late Night with David Letterman. Check them out now.

Indianapolis band Phyllis opened the show and were a knock-out, hitting all my power pop buttons. Some GBV, some Smithereens, even some Cavedogs — great hooks, catchy-as-hell melodies — if they had a CD to buy, I would have purchased it. Check them out at Musical Family Tree.

The Kemps, another local band, closed the show with their timeless garage pop. I saw them open for Alabama Shakes a few months back and my opinion hasn’t changed: nothing mind-blowing, but solid and entertaining rock.
