Dastardly

The marriage between old west folk and the ambiguous genre of “indie rock” makes the songs of Dastardly a palatable playlist for those who aren’t normally attracted to cowboy crooners. In fact, by the sound of the screaming girls heard at Subterranean, we’re pretty sure the band was responsible for converting quite a few pop princesses into banjo loving broads. Broad Ripple Music Fest – Night 2 10/15/2011

The second night of the Broad Ripple Music Fest can be summed up this way:

1) Irene and Reed are a great way to start an evening.

2) Howler should be huge.

3) Tapes N Tapes make good albums but you need to see them live to fully appreciate the material. Great energy.

4) The Locals Only amateur comedy hour is sad.

4) Mardelay should perform more. They were kicking.

5) I can’t wait until the Bonesetters record their album.

Broad Ripple Music Fest Preview: Mardelay

More than 18 months have passed since Mardelay‘s last show, but vocalist/guitarist Matt Street is ready to jump back in. “We took some time off, but I just realized how much I missed it.”

Street and his band are part of Broad Ripple Music Fest‘s Locals Only showcase next Saturday (10/15), which he hopes will be the beginning of a new chapter for Mardelay. “We’ve got about 12 or 13 new songs and we’re going to start recording. We’ll play five of them at the show, along with five older songs.”

Mardelay — the name comes from a made up phrase one of Street’s old vocal teachers used to describe the initial attack on note — recorded its first album, What We’ve Become, in 2009. They followed that up with the You Got Caught EP, but then life took them in different directions.

“We needed a break. I didn’t want to hear anything about music. I needed some time to reset. And turning 30 and starting a family put things into perspective. But we’ll definitely play some more shows now that we have some new material.”

Street credits bands like Built to Spill, Guided By Voices, and U2 as influences. Like the classic GBV lineup now making music again, Mardelay is ready for another go-around.

“I spent 12 years finding inspiration and I couldn’t do it anymore,” said Street. “But I’m back now. I found some more and it feels good to play again.”

Mardelay plays the 11:00 set.
