Get Yer Live Music On – Indy in March

The Indianapolis live music scene in March comes in like a lion . . . and goes out like one. Yup, it’s that packed, so you have no excuses not to venture out for at least a few of these wicked nights. A few great shows are already in the books — it would be a shame to miss many more. Here are some suggestions:

March 8 – Elliot Brood at White Rabbit Cabaret: Like the Avett Bros? You’ll like this Canadian trio. Check out the preview at Do317.com.

March 9 – The Wood Brothers at Earth House: Head and the Heart has been sold out for months, so try out these seasoned purveyors of classic Americana.

March 11 – Hoots & Hellmouth at White Rabbit Cabaret: More solid new folk/Americana. And it’s an early show so you’ll get home fairly early.

March 14 – Dr Dog w/ Givers at Deluxe: Dr Dog has been a road warrior for years, building their live reputation. Givers is riding a huge wave of buzz. Should be a great one.

March 15 – The Winter Sounds at Melody Inn: An unheralded indie pop band that’s on the cusp. And a month isn’t complete without at least one trip to the Mel.

March 16 – Black Keys and Arctic Monkeys at Bankers Life Fieldhouse: If you’re not already locked in to this one . . .just go.

March 17 – Dave Barnes at Earth House: Solid singer/songwriter showcase.

March 20 – Hank 3 at the Vogue: Rockabilly roll. Get ready.

March 21 – Said the Whale at White Rabbit Cabaret: Up-and-coming indie pop band. Catch them now.

March 22 – Rachel Yamagata at Radio Radio: Another nice singer/songwriter show.

March 24 – Delta Spirit w/ Waters at Radio Radio: Excellent double-bill. This one’s almost sold out so you better make your move soon.

Not enough? I didn’t even mention all the great shows down in Bloomington. Get off the couch.

Arctic Monkeys w/ Smith Westerns – Old National Centre 10/3/2011

Four proper albums and five years into their careers, Arctic Monkeys finally made their way to Indianapolis. Touring in support of newest record, Suck It And See, the band alternated between the crazy energy, fast-paced, dance punk-pop that helped them build their name and the more melodic songs that have crept into their catalog of late.

The show opened with the in-your-face Pretty Visitors from Humbug followed by the dark, swagger of Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair and Black Treacle from Suck It. After a nice version of The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala, also from the new record, the band kicked the show into a new gear. The three-song set of Brainstorm, The View from the Afternoon, and I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor was the perfect combination of everything the Monkeys were about when they began. On the opposite end of the spectrum, She’s Thunderstorms, which opens Suck It and was played mid-set, is arguably the most mature song they’ve ever written. Lead Monkey Alex Turner has developed into a really dynamic front man, and the rest of the band supports him well.

The Monkeys wrapped up the tight main set with early single When the Sun Goes Down. The crowd then called them back out for an encore, a three-song wrap-up consisting of Teddy Picker, Crying Lightning, and 505. I would have liked to see them play longer — 75 minutes for a band with four albums is on the short side — but the show was tight and never lagged. Let’s hope Indianapolis doesn’t have to wait another five years.

Opening act Smith Westerns were a completely different story. I’ll say this first: I like the newest album, Dye It Blonde. I think it’s got several really good songs. But their performance tonight was a train wreck. The sound mix was terrible, the guitars frequently sounded like they were out of tune, and they had a smoke machine working overtime like it was a Sisters of Mercy show. They’re a young band with a lot of promise, but they can’t come out and be that sloppy and unpolished and expect to win new fans.

Were you there? What was your take on the show?

Upcoming: September 30 – October 5

The concert schedule gets crazy in October. Below are notable upcoming shows.

Friday, September 30Jon Stewart at Indiana University

The Daily Show host in town for a sold out show. You could drive down and try your luck with a scalper. Good interview with him in a recent issue of Rolling Stone.

Saturday, October 1 – TWO BIG CHOICES

1) Yuck at Radio Radio

Yuck is flat-out awesome. The band sounds like they arrived in a time machine from the early 90s. Great show in Fountain Square

2) Avett Brothers at White River State Park

Another terrific band. Been amazing to watch them graduate from small clubs to amphitheaters. And the Avetts are always great live. You won’t be disappointed.

Monday, October 3

Arctic Monkeys w/ Smith Westerns at Old National Centre

Seems like just yesterday the Monkeys stormed the music scene. Now they’re touring in support of their fourth album. Openers Smith Westerns are the perfect warm-up. Going to be a lot of fun.

Tuesday, October 4

Foster the People w/ Cults at The Vogue

If you’re not familiar with Pumped Up Kicks at this point, you’ve probably been in a coma. Good bill with Cults showcasing its retro-esque pop. Show is sold out but, again, you can try your luck out front.

Wednesday, October 5

Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks at Earth House

Legendary indie figure touring in support of his new album. Really looking forward to this one.
