The Lemonheads – The Vogue 1/20/2012

The Lemonheads have a long, colorful history. Beginning as a punk-influenced, almost hardcore band and morphing into an indie-pop band, Evan Dando and his rotating band members are responsible for several great songs during their careers. In terms of cohesive albums, none stands taller than 1992′s It’s A Shame About Ray. At a concise 30 minutes, Ray is a breezy, catchy pop album with several classic songs.

Dando brought his band to the Vogue Friday night to play that album in its entirety, along with many other great Lemonheads tracks. Dando came out alone with just an acoustic guitar, kicking off with Being Around from Come on Feel the Lemonheads, followed by Car Button Cloth’s The Outdoor Type. Considering the stories that have circulated over the years, Dando looked and sounded remarkably unchanged.

After four solo songs, the band then came out to play Ray, launching into the punchy opening track, Rockin’ Stroll. Local legend and sometime Lemonhead Vess Ruhtenberg then joined the band for the killer trifecta of Confetti, the title track, and an especially great version of Rudderless that reached a moment of catharsis at the song’s closing repeated phrase, “a ship without a rudder’s like a ship without a rudder.”

Vess left the stage for the rest of the album’s performance, which included a terrific Allison’s Starting to Happen. It’s a testament to Ray’s longevity that when Dando wrapped it up with closing track, Frank Mills, I would have been content if they just played it all over again.

Dando closed out the main set with several more acoustic songs. The encore again featured the full band, including one of Dando’s childhood friends for a handful of covers. Vess returned and was an energy boost for the final two songs, Come On’s Down About It and Rick James Style.

Though Ray was the obvious highlight, the complete 90-minute show was a warm piece of nostalgia on a snowy Indy night. Listening to those songs live after almost 20 years was like a wonderful visit from an old friend you haven’t seen in a while. It was great to hear and see them again.
