Metric was one of the stronger groups to arise as part of the Canadian collective of bands — notably Broken Social Scene, Stars, and The Stills — that grew to prominence in the early 2000s. The group’s music organically pulled together new wave and electronica influences while still grasping the pop hook. Metric has made a few trips to Indy over the past decade, including a a great show opening for the Stills at Birdy’s in 2004. This performance, recorded in Toronto in 2005, was an early date for the band’s Live It Out tour, thus the set list mix of Out songs and selections from previous record, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?
After a noisy intro, the band launched into Underground opener IOU. Front woman extraordinaire Emily Haines immediately let the audience know she was in charge, convincingly delivering the menacing yet sultry vocals.
Fan favorite The List was next, followed by Live It Out’s raucous first single, Monster Hospital.
Haines and the band maintained the tone through the rest of the show. Mid-set highlight Combat Baby was particularly fierce.
The show ended with two classic Underground tunes — the groovetastic, never-gets-old Hustle Rose and a snarling Dead Disco.
Metric released its third, and best, proper album, Fantasies, in 2009. If 2012 is kind, we’re due for another.
Have you seen Metric live? What did you think?
