Fresh Droppings: The Corner Laughers – Poppy Seeds

Summer may have officially just started but you can get the perfect album for the season now. Poppy Seeds by San Francisco band The Corner Laughers has all the sunny melodies, bright hooks, and bouncy charm that makes for the perfect warm weather soundtrack.

The twelve songs on Poppy Seeds shimmy and sway with an upbeat energy that will burst into your brain’s happy place and implant themselves like a happy, benevolent earwig. Try not to listen to opening track Grasshopper Clock without a smile on your face. The giddy Twice the Luck is dangling out there for a savvy brand to co-opt for an unforgettable commercial. Now that the Beach Boys are back, they should consider covering Transamerica Pyramid. Fans would probably think it was a lost classic.

Lead singer Karla Kane’s voice has a resplendent tone reminiscent of Velocity Girl’s Sarah Shannon. With open production that allows the pure harmonies, piano, ukelele, and percussion to shine through, Poppy Seeds is a front to back winner.

You’re warned: Get this album now. It’s that good.
