Big Head Todd and the Monsters have been cranking out blues-influenced rock since the late 1980s. The last time I saw them live was in 1994 at Indiana University for the Stratagem tour. Almost 20 years later, the band still sounds nearly the same.
The atmosphere in Super Bowl Village was electric as the band promptly took the stage at 9:00. After a short fireworks display, the band launched into Cashbox from 2007′s All the Love You Need. Todd Park Mohr’s guitar was fierce and the band plowed through their set.
BHTM still rely heavily on their best album, 1993′s Sister Sweetly. It’s Alright was the first of several Sweetly songs played on the night, including the title track, Bittersweet, and Broken Hearted Savior. The most interesting moment of the evening was a mash-up like cover of Eric Clapton’s Forever Man, featuring a lead-in and lead-out from Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall.
All in all, the band did what it does best — and what it’s been doing well for so many years — solid, classic rock. But in the Super Bowl Village environment, with our startlingly great weather, it was even better than I expected.
